Is Telematics Technology the future for Australian trucks?

From navigation and route planning to dispatch and driver performance, the heavy transport and road freight industries are seeing the increased take up of telematics technology to improve productivity, regulatory compliance and road safety.

National Heavy Haulage takes a brief look at the types of telematics technology for trucks and how Australia’s governments and heavy transport operators are managing the uptake.

What is telematics technology for trucks?

In-vehicle telematics have developed from stand-alone devices to interactive and integrated systems for use across complex road freight fleets. Broadly speaking, telematics technology can include:

  • Vehicle tracking
  • Navigation
  • Fatigue management
  • Driver performance management
  • Vehicle performance management
  • Driver communication/messaging
  • Route planning and scheduling
  • Freight Tracking
  • Order taking/Dispatch

The potential benefits of telematics are immense from improved business efficiency, environmental impacts and importantly road safety, through better management of speed compliance, driver fatigue and vehicle-to-vehicle interaction.

A National Technology Framework

In consultation with heavy haulage, road freight operators, unions, suppliers and governments, the National Transport Commission put together a National Compliance Framework to guide this transition to telematics technology for trucks.

So what will this framework mean for the industry?

  • Provide a reference for regulators
  • Guide the market to integrate commercial and regulatory applications
  • Set minimum standards of technology
  • Ensure proper use and access of telematics data by governments and stakeholders

The Framework should go some way to easing industry fears about transparency, especially how telematics data will be used by governments into the future. The overall aim is to increase the voluntary uptake of in-vehicle telematics to improve road safety, productivity and environmental outcomes when it comes to telematics technology for trucks. 

The release of the Framework comes as the NSW Centre for Road Safety launches its Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (CITS) trial, which aims to improve road safety through a telematics system allowing vehicles to communicate with each other and roadside infrastructure including traffic signals and railway level crossings.
