Improved NHVR heat map to boost freight performance

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) recently unveiled a new tool that will help local government improve infrastructure. Enhanced performance heat map technology will improve the way freight is moved across the country, and is an innovation that will likely be welcomed by truckies, road transport companies and local government offices everywhere.

About the NHVR heat map

These maps will enable local government departments to make comparisons between permit requests in different areas, and work alongside nearby councils to pinpoint where changes and improvements could be made to the roads. The tool should help with unblocking the affected red areas on the maps and make an excellent addition to road manager resources.

Local governmental associations and jurisdictions can collaborate, using the maps to find places where infrastructure work is required, and the NHVR is working with road managers in order to get a better handle on impacted areas and boost the flow of traffic and freight on roads throughout the country.

The NHVR's director of access, Peter Caprioli said: "The NHVR has successfully collated and compared 12 months of data to illustrate and enhance our understanding of where the blockages are positioned. This will help with addressing the concerned areas across the country."

It seems that most problem areas identified on the maps are due to infrastructure maintenance issues and poor road paving conditions; these problems should hopefully start to be solved more quickly with the utilisation of the new heat map technology.

The NHVR

As Australia’s independent regulator for vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of over 4.5 tonnes, the NHVR is responsible for making sure the heavy vehicle road transport industry is as safe, efficient, and productive as possible. They aim to ensure there is a common set of laws for large vehicles in every state and territory, and that the industry is compliant with all related laws and regulations.
