Hands free mobile phone options for truck drivers

Hands free mobile phone options for truck drivers

It is illegal across the whole of Australia to use a hand-held phone when driving. It doesn’t matter if your truck has stopped at a traffic light – as a truck driver you shouldn’t be using your phone. You also shouldn’t use your phone to email or text while you’re driving unless you want to face a fine or cause an accident.

However, it is possible to use your phone in your truck if it is completely hands free. But what are your options? We’ve come up with a list of the three main styles of hands-free types you might want to take advantage of when you’re riding in your cab.

1. Wired and wireless Bluetooth headsets

Wired and wireless Bluetooth headsets is the cheapest option for a hands free phone and the bonus is that it’s also portable, so once you’ve finished driving you can carry on your conversation when you’ve left your truck. However, you do need to charge your headset and when this is happening you won’t be able to use it.

2. Portable kits for the car

If a headset isn’t your thing – sometimes they can be uncomfortable to wear and frustrating to use – then you might decide to opt for a portable car kit instead. A portable car kit normally attaches to your truck’s visor and the better ones have noise reduction technology so the sound while you’re on the phone is great. Essentially these kits are an external speaker for your phone, allowing you to make calls using voice recognition, and to hear your conversations on loud speaker in your cab. The benefit of these kits is that you can take them with you if you change trucks.

3. Installed hands free kits

Some trucks come with hands free systems already installed, and some trucks allow for the systems to be installed after you purchase the truck. Because they are installed in your truck’s cab, when a call is received your music will mute itself and you’ll be able to speak to the caller through your truck’s audio system. Many of these kits will also display the name of the person who is calling up on your truck’s dashboard.

We hope these three hands free options will help you decide which is best for you and your travelling style.
